To help you make the most of the warm weather and calm skies, we wanted to share our favourite beaches in the Dartmouth area so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the seaside.
4 Best Dartmouth Holiday Beaches
Given that Devon is populated by stunning beaches, it’s difficult to decide which one to head to. Even a long Dartmouth holiday wouldn’t be enough to explore them all. To make sure that you can make the most of your time at our Dartmouth chalets, we’ve listed our favourite four beaches in the Dartmouth area. At least this way, if you can’t choose between them, there’s a chance you might be able to visit them all! Here’s our four favourite beaches:
Blackpool Sands
It would be a crime to make a list like this without including Blackpool Sands. This sheltered bay is renowned for its golden sand and pristine water, as well as for its stunning crown of pines and evergreens that make the area feel all the more private and isolated, like your own private beach getaway. Visiting this beach should be an essential trip for your Dartmouth holidays, particularly if your booking is during the summer months. In terms of amenities, the beach has plenty, including: easily accessible toilets, seasonal events, lifeguards during the summer, as well as a nearby café and a beach shop for water-sports equipment hire. All this means that there’s more than enough here to sustain you from sunrise to sunset. Both of which, by the way, offer stunning views that aren’t to be missed.
Sugary Cove
Appropriately named, because any afternoon spent here will be sweet! Within a walkable distance from Dartmouth’s town centre (we actually think it’s one of 4 best walks from our Dartmouth chalets!) Sugary Cove is a secluded and hidden stretch of shingle and stone perched at the mouth of the River Dart.
Surrounded by rocks and cliffs, this beach is perfectly sheltered from any inland winds and makes a great place for kayaking or paddle-boarding if you brought sea-sports equipment with you on your Dartmouth holiday. If not, you could always rent some in town!

It’s also worth keeping in mind that the nearest toilets are at Dartmouth castle, a short walk away. Lastly, the cove completely disappears at high tide, so be sure to plan your holiday excursion to this Dartmouth beach carefully
Slapton Sands
This is a perfect one for a British seaside picnic – something that can’t be missed on any self catering holiday in Dartmouth. Slapton Sands has all the charm of a golden bay, but also has a deeper significance to the area. It plays an important role in the preservation of some of the UK’s rarest flora and fauna, so it makes for a great place to do a little adventuring. Not only that, Slapton Sands is often used as a base for rehearsing the D-day landings, so any history fan should be able to find something to enjoy here.
The sea here is very calm and most swimmers and water sports enthusiasts should have no difficulty navigating the waves on most days. A flag system is in place to let you know where is safe to swim, making this a great choice for a family Dartmouth holiday where your children can have some fun in the ocean. If you happen to forget your picnic, there is a cafe nearby to stock up on snacks and other supplies. The entire coastline that Slapton Sands is a part of has been designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, so it’s no surprise that this is one of the most popular beaches for those on a Dartmouth holiday.
Landcombe Cove
This is one of Dartmouth’s secret beaches. Hidden between Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands is Landcombe Cove. A small, beautiful cove that is perfect for those who are looking for a little more privacy on their Dartmouth holiday beach trip. The cliffs that surround this small curve of sand only adds to the sense of seclusion.
Because it is less well known, the best way to reach this spot is by taking the coast path from Strete. This makes for a lovely walk over headlands and fields, but the way down to the cove itself is quite steep, so should not be challenged by anyone not confident in their ability to keep their footing. As with Sugary Cove, it is easy to become cut off at high tide, so be sure to plan your trip accordingly.
